pop-before-smtp for Debian -------------------------- You will need to tweak your Mail Transport Agent to make any use of the daemon. For Postfix 2.x =============== The easy way (works with recent postfix releases) is to run `dpkg-reconfigure postfix` and add the pop-before-smtp database to the list of local networks like this: 127.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, hash:/var/lib/pop-before-smtp/hosts Alternatively (the "classical" way) edit /etc/postfix/main.cf to have an entry like this (read the postfix documentation for further info): smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,reject_non_fqdn_recipient, check_client_access hash:/var/lib/pop-before-smtp/hosts, reject_unauth_destination Besides the above, you may need to edit /etc/pop-before-smtp/pop-before-smtp.conf to recognize pop and imap daemons other than the default ones. For Exim 4 ========== Add this to the hostlist "relay_from_hosts": net-dbmnz;/var/lib/pop-before-smtp/hosts.db One way to do this without manual editing is to run this: dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config ... and include the the above string when asked what machines to relay mail for. NAT ISP ------- Note that if you have a user checking their email from behind a NAT box, all other users from behind that same NAT box share the same IP, and thus are all authorized to send mail. This isn't normally a problem, however, because a spammer sharing a NAT-using ISP with a valid user would need to know when and where a valid user was sending their email to be able to make use of the same SMTP server. Some folks might need to be more cautious about this than others, though, so do keep this in mind if you have users who share an IP address with a large pool of users.
