At Kevin Lynn <klynn@santacruz.org>'s suggestion, I'm including here notes on running this daemon as a non-root user. The daemon has no intrinsic need to run as root. Depending on your local security practice, it may have no such need at all. pop-before-smtp has a few permission requirements. It must be able to read the maillog; it must be able to run and read the output of postconf; and it must be able to write the db file. For the simplest installation allowing non-root pop-before-smtp, you simply must ensure that maillog, and the directory that contains it, are world readable (default on most systems), and have a special non-root user, let's say (for purposes of argument) "popbsmtp", which owns a mode 755 directory in which the db file will be read; it might be a subdirectory of /etc/postfix/, but it can be anywhere. /var may be more appropriate. To be concrete, let's say /var/popbsmtp/. You might create the user with useradd -d /no/home -M popbsmtp (Red Hat options, may vary on other systems). Then the init invocation might be nohup su popbsmtp /usr/sbin/pop-before-smtp \ --dbfile=/var/popbsmtp/pop-before-smtp and the /etc/postfix/main.cf entry might look something like smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,reject_non_fqdn_recipient, check_client_access hash:/var/popbsmtp/pop-before-smtp, reject_unauth_destination If your local security policy makes you want to avoid the world-readable maillog, simply make /var/popbsmtp mode 700, and have syslogd (which runs as root, and writes with root privs), put the pop/imap log entries in e.g. /var/popbsmtp/maillog, then invoke the daemon with a command like nohup su popbsmtp /usr/sbin/pop-before-smtp \ --logfile=/var/popbsmtp/maillog \ --dbfile=/var/popbsmtp/pop-before-smtp
